Liquid Mayhem Convulsion + Tiny Child Rig = Walleye

Last winter, while surfing fishing videos, I came across a couple of videos on the tiny child rig. I was so impressed that I couldn't wait to try it this season for walleyes. The tiny child rig is a spin-off of the ned rig. The only difference is you can use larger stick baits, and it can be fish either with the hook exposed or by texas rigging it, making it weedless. To make a tiny child rig, you'll need stick baits, weights, and hooks. I used the Liquid Mayhem Convulsion in the Crawdad and Peanut Butter & Jelly colors for a stick bait. They come in a package of 8 with a Bonus tube of Liquid Mayhem Attractant inside. We all know the advantages of adding a dab of the Liquid Mayhem Attraction is, and having a sample tube enclosed with the baits makes for the complete package. VMC Half Moon Wacky Weights in 1/8 and 3/16 ounces are an excellent choice for the tail weight. The ribbed design helps secure them, although I found that tying the weights on with a piece of mono or adding a dab of super glue helped prevent losing them when fighting fish. I used the VMC Neko and the Finesse Neko hooks in sizes one and two for hooks. The Finesse Neko has an adjustable Flurocarbbon keeper that kept the Mayhem Convulsion from sliding up the line when fishing it in cover. While at my friends' Craig and Josee Salmonson's cottage this spring, I dropped the Liquid Mayhem Convulsion on the tiny child rig into the water next to the dock. This allowed me to watch the action as I dragged it across the bottom like a ned rig. I then tried a double pop of the rod tip. I noticed a double pop of the rod tip imparted a snake-like action of the Mayhem Convulsion as it shot up off the bottom. As it descended back to the bottom, I noticed that bait fell backward. Falling back into the face of a fish I knew would trigger followers into striking. Both methods produced Walleyes, Smallmouth, and Pike throughout the season. When texas rigged, the Finesse Neko hook held the Convulsion in place without me having to readjust the bait every cast or so. I could weave it through wood or weeds without snagging or fouling with weeds, allowing me to spend more time fishing. I fish the VMC Neko hook in snag-free areas with the hook point exposed. Leaving the hook point exposed ensures better hooksets in deeper water. The drawback was that I had to readjust the Convulsion after catching a fish as the bait slid up the line. When fishing the tiny child rig in depths over 20 feet on windy days, I found it challenging to keep contact with the bottom due to the line bowing and the lightweights used for this technique. I used the 6'6' Streamside Predator medium action rod with 8lbs. Flame Green FireLine with a six-foot leader of 12lbs Seaguar InvizX Fluorocarbon. Using the high-vis Fireline helped detect light strikes and line movement when a fish picked up the bait and swam with it. The six-foot leader of 12lbs, Seaguar InvizX Fluorocarbon, helped prevent line abrasion when fishing in wood and rocky shorelines and allowed for a bit of stretch that acts as a shock absorber when fighting a fish. A steady sweeping hookset quickly drove the fine wire hook into the boney mouth of a walleye. After hooking the fish, make sure to back off your drag to prevent straightening out the fine wire Neko hook during the fight. Liquid Mayhem Convulsion is a very durable bait. The only reason I had to change baits was when where the hook was inserted tore. I was able to catch 15 or more fish before replacing one. After changing one, I cut off the damaged section and reused it as a finesse version of the child rig or as a Ned bait rather than throwing away the remaining piece of the Convulsion. The child rig isn't a magical technique; however, not getting snagged and spending less time having to retie in snag-infested areas allowed me to fish more with my bait in the water. I hope this piqued your interest in picking up a couple of packages of Liquid Mayhem Convulsion, along with some VMC Neko, Finesse Neko hooks, and VMC Half Moon Wacky Weights. You won't be sorry you did.
