Boxing Week Brownskies

Boxing week was calling for some lighter winds and smaller waves, making it possible to get out on the lake and wet some lines around some Great Lake shoals. The holidays were busy and it is nice to be done, with a couple days to get out fishing before going back to work. It was cold weather making our line and reels freezing up quickly, but steam off the water and birds flying around is always a good sign in the morning. We had two days of fishing left in the holidays and Mother Nature cooperated with us. With good winds or not a survival suit in the winter months is mandatory in my boat, you never know when you might need it. Winter weather can be unexpected, checking all different weather sites to try to determine a good safe weather report for our trip on the big water. Always make sure wind and other weather conditions are safe for the water you are fishing, being caught in rough weather in the winter is very dangerous. Another concern in the winter months, cold weather can play tricks on your outboard, one drop of water on your spark plugs can leave you stranded. Adding some gas line anti-freeze to your gas will help stop this from happening, and help your trip go smoother. Spare plugs and a plug wrench is another great safety backup, if plugs are fouled news ones can get you home. Some sand paper to clean them and a lighter to dry them if needed can always save the day. With calm seas we were able to get out and control our fishing patterns, with two trips out we managed quite a few beauty brown trout, and a nice healthy 3 lb Atlantic Salmon caught and released by my buddy Mike Good. These fish were smashing hard and full of spunk, big mean headshakes and tonnes of screaming line pulls! Safety first for every fishing trip and every fishing trip will be a good one!
