Winter Fun

It was my last day off before back to work last week and I found a partner to hit the lake again . We were not in the water for more then a minute and an aggressive rainbow smokes my jig, a nice spawned out female, quick picture and a release. Next cast I thought I hit bottom, with the set of a hook to make sure I felt a slight raise off bottom followed with some headshakes. Oh I love headshakes! I believe this rainbow was my personal best, pictures didn't justify but she was 32 long with some serious girth, some loud hooting and hollering went on when she was in the net. Again a quick picture and a while to revive her but again a smooth release. As the trout kept coming, my partner kept catching 3-4 lb smallies, one after another, too bad they are not in season. Not long after that some screaming line off the reel and we knew this was no bass. Once to the net my buddy got a beautiful 4 lb brown, not long after that he got the brightest coloured brown I have seen in my boat. She was very Gold brown colour with big black spots down her whole side and from top to bottom, she made my day, a 10 lb porker. All day we were fishing with the Eagles soaring above looking for a meal and we landed 11 trout total, not sure how many the eagles clawed. I can not stress the importance of a survival suit when fishing open water in the winter. I have 2 extra suits at home an xl and a medium. I always have an extra for any partner coming in my boat. Catching winter trout is what is a blast but safety is always first.

Nice work Matt! Beauty trout! Your a lucky man being able to get out. We've been waiting for the calm and warm to show up at the same time on Erie. The only days calm enough to get out the launches freeze way out into the lake! Looks like it was a blast man.
