Chasing steel with family and friends

Went fishing with my uncle and a family friend on Thursday. There was a lot of frost on the ground in the morning and took a while for the temp to warm up. We got some rain during the week which mucked up the water. To start, we spent a few hours upstream, but had no luck so we decided to drive to another spot downstream. The clarity improved as we moved South. My uncle did well on the fly going 4/5. He used a milking egg with salted minnows and also caught one on an olive woolly. I went 2/2, one on a 10mm chartreuse bead, the other on a white Berkley minnow. The weather was gorgeous and it was awesome fishing with my uncle who introduced me to steelheading. He showed me how he sets up his fly rig and I showed him and his friend how I set up my pinning rig. My uncle was only going to fish a ½ day but, at around 12, he landed a fish and then about 10 minutes later I landed one and he said "yeah I'm calling into work, let's keep fishing haha. I always have a blast fishing with him whether it's on the creek or boat. He gets super excited every time someone catches a fish and it's always a blast watching him land one as well. Friday started off a little chilly but turned out to be a beautiful day! Fished the same trib and it was a lot more clear than yesterday. Started upstream and saw a lot of fish, but they weren't fooled with what I threw at them. It took a couple of hours for the bite to heat up. It was one of those days where you really needed patience and switching up tackle a lot to figure out what they wanted. I tied up a chartreuse egg sac and fist drift in a nice deep hole, landed a nice buck. He took a few crazy runs, it was a great fight. Felt good getting the skunk out and landing the first fish. It's definitely a confidence boost when you've had a really slow day of fishing. Middle of the day drove downstream. Water was clear and lower than normal. Switched up my tackle to an olive jig, which has been very successful on this trib and ended up landing 2 more steel and a bunch of suckers. I have to say I have been skeptical of olive jigs. My buddy owns a local tackle shop and he was always trying to convince me to get some, and I finally caved about a month ago. Well, I am a believer now! I have caught over 10 fish on these jigs the past month. Egg sacs, along with those Olive jigs were my weapon of choice today! Good luck to all my Canadian friends on their season opener today! I look forward to reading your reports!
