An Unexpected Catch!

Spent this past weekend fishing with a buddy from Hearst, ON. Denis Martin drove to Sault Ste Marie on Friday night and we fished 2 long days on the St Marys River Hunting Walleyes. Our first day on the river saw us net over 30 walleyes and we went through 10 dozen crawlers. It was lots of fun and you cannot beat the jig bite in the River. The next day saw us net another 30+ walleyes but we had to be a little more creative as the bite got a little tougher. We grinded but between jigging and bottom bouncing we were able to get it done. The highlight of the trip was the fact we spent 50 minutes to an hour fighting a sturgeon that was caught accidental when jigging for eyes. I was using a 6'6 Streamside Predator medium heavy spinning rod when the beast hit. I only had 10 lb Berkley Fireline line on the reel. A real Testament to the Predator Rod and Berkley Fireline strength. With this equipment we were able to get this beast into the boat for some pictures and then we gently released her back in the murky waters. The Sturgeon was about 5'6 inches and we think it weighed approx 90-100 lbs. This was a personal best Sturgeon for me, a great story and memory. This was the first time fishing with Denis and it was a blast. Can't wait to do it again in the future. He also used a Streamside Predator rod and he couldn't believe the sensitivity and finesse this rod brings to the table. We might have converted him to Streamside going forward.
