Loading up for Ice Fishing

It's that time of the year in Southern Ontario when it's time to start loading up your spools for the hard water season. Whether you are fishing for lake trout or perch, I have come to rely on NanoFil. It's a great line for ice fishing because it is a no stretch line which gives you great feel and hook setting capabilities. The best thing about NanoFil and ice fishing is that it doesn't absorb water and sinks quickly getting your baits down in a hurry, especially when you are fishing deep for lake trout. NanoFil has about a 3 lb. test diameter which also helps it sink quickly. With no water absorption, like other super lines, you will have far less issues with line performance. Another great thing about NanoFil is you can see the white line or hi vis chartreuse if you prefer watching your line for those subtle strikes. Once spooled up, I like to tie on about a 12-20 foot leader of Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon so that I don't spook the fish in ultra clear water under the ice. I don't buy specialty leader material because the 200 yd. spool will usually last me a whole season of leaders. It's far more economical using regular fluorocarbon and works great. Give NanoFil a try this season through the ice and you will quickly become a fan of it. I use 6 lb. for perch and 10 lb. for lakers, with a fluoro leader attached. With luck, we will be able to get out ice fishing during the Christmas break.
