To conceal themselves in cover, bass typically hang in the shadows, looking out into the light. Forage moving about in sunlit areas have difficulty seeing the predator in the shade, but the reverse is not true. The bass will position itself to take full advantage of this vision superiority. I was told that the visual acuity of the largemouth increases about three-fold when looking into sunlit areas from shady ones. These awesome predators have evolved in such a way that the tops of their bodies take on the color of their environment enabling them to stalk their prey more effectively and reposition themselves in or against cover during the day depending on sun, shadow content, wind and current. Because of their subtle adjustments in position, you would be best to make repeated casts to a piece of cover from different angles, allowing your bait to pass into the "view the bass sees through, at any given time. Bass have an extremely wide view of vision. 180 degrees for each eye giving them "binocular vision in front and slightly upward due to the overlap field. Shaded cover may produce several good bass over a period of hours for a couple of reasons. Different fish move in and out of prime feeding spots in their search of food or that the spot may hold several bass that are in a inactive feeding mode. Catch a few and come back later but remember to adjust your boat angle according to changes in the sun, wind and current. Tight Lines!
