Miramichi Stipers part 2

Trip three was crazy and there is no other way to describe it. We had just launched the boat and Miramichi Striper Cup organizer Jeff Wilson called and told us the fish were upriver from where we were. I knew where he was talking about as he and I had filmed an episode of Backwater Casting on Rogers TV NB and boated a load of fish. A ten minute run up the river in the Triton and we were catching fish and it was just that fast. Ron started off with the Sand Eels he has used the week before but they would not hit them so I spent a few minutes rigging some different weights on the soft jerk baits until he found one he liked the feel of. He stayed with the Shimano SLX 7' MH he had used last trip. He likes the feel of it and he never put it down all day. I went with a Shimano Exage 7' MH with the 2500 Nasci reel and 20 lb Power Pro and gave it a workout. It is hard to describe the sheer number of fish that are in the river during the spawning run. It was pretty cloudy but anytime the sun broke through I could see schools of Stripers swimming by the boat. We probably had about twenty boats in the area around us which gave us all lots of room to fish. We stuck with soft 7" jerk baits all day in White and in Shad colours and a 3/8ths swim baits head. It was a good mix of casting distance and drop speed in the water. Cast, twitch the bait a time or two and set the hook. From 8:30 am to 3 pm we landed 179 Stripers with the biggest being 84 cm long. We probably only fished a hundred yards of river and dropped the Talon every time we hooked up and worked the school that was going through. The trip up is about five hours round trip from where I live near Fredericton but it is well worth the drive to go up and experience a world class fishery that is almost in my backyard. Miramichi City has lots of hotels, motels, cabins and resorts in the area and if you want a trip to remember next May could be your time. Good fishing
